We put a high priority on higher education

Smart, hard-working young people deserve to attend college. But tuition costs keep going up. At CommonWealth One, we're trying to make higher education more affordable for our members. For the past 18 years, we've been awarding scholarships to some of the best and brightest students in the region.

Alexandria City High School Scholarships

These scholarships are open to graduating seniors from Alexandria City High School who plan to enroll full time (minimum 15 credits per semester) in an accredited college, career or technical school. Two scholarships are awarded – one to a graduating Academy of Finance student and one to a graduating senior.

The application deadline for this scholarship has passed for the 2024-2025 school year.

Harrisonburg - Rockingham County High School Scholarship

This $2,500 scholarship is open to graduating seniors attending a Harrisonburg/Rockingham county area high school who plan to enroll full time (minimum 15 credits per semester) in an accredited college, career or technical school.

The application deadline for this scholarship is Sunday, March 31, 2024.

Kathryn R. Coleman Scholarships

We award two $2,500 Kathryn R. Coleman Scholarships - the Financial Capability Scholarship Award and the Community Leader Scholarship Award. These scholarships are open to all CommonWealth One members.

The application deadline for this scholarship is Sunday, March 31, 2024.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications for the Kathryn R. Coleman and Harrisonburg High School scholarships are evaluated by a committee, with attention paid to:

• An essay
• Extracurricular activities
• Community involvement
• Honors/awards
• Employment/internships
• Academic excellence and achievement

Eligibility Requirements

• Must be a member of CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union
• Must be the primary member on your own account
• Account must be in good standing
• Must be a graduating high school senior or college/university student attending a fully accredited college, university, or other institution of higher learning

2023 - 2024 Recipients

• The 2023 Academy of Finance Scholarship recipient was Alexis Colton. Alexis is attending James Madison University, pursuing a degree in Hospitality Management. 

• The 2023 Alexandria City School Scholarship recipient was Cameron Beaujon.

• The 2023 Harrisonburg-Rockingham County High School Scholarship recipient was Eddie Macgill who is pursuing a degree at University of Virginia.

• The 2023 Kathryn R. Coleman Financial Capability Scholarship recipient was Benedicte Phemba Nzita who is pursuing a degree at Northern Virginia Community College.

• The 2023 Kathryn R. Coleman Community Leader Scholarship recipient was Mary Eleanor Hermes who is pursuing a degree at University of Virginia.
