April showers bring May flowers — and the financial seeds you plant now can grow into success for years to come!

April is Financial Literacy Month, and along with reading, writing and arithmetic, learning about money is one of the most important educational topics. Statistics show that people who learn about budgeting, saving and investing in high school are more likely to earn more and avoid debt.

But even if you’re long out of high school, it’s not too late! Financial Literacy Month is the perfect time to remind you about all the ways CommonWealth One can help you (and your money) grow, no matter what financial goals you have.

Here are five ways to honor Financial Literacy Month in April — and a bunch of resources from your friends here at CommonWealth One!

  • Make Financial Literacy the topic of your book club! There are lots of good financial books out there from classics like “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” to “The Behavior Gap.” Ask your local librarian or bookstore for recommendations!
  • Dive into Banzai! CommonWealth One offers access to Banzai, an online library of videos, classes and information on all sorts of financial topics. In addition, for teens and young adults, we offer access to “It’s a Money Thing”. You can access both easily at www.cofcu.org/resources/financial-education.
  • Commit to a new financial goal. Have you been thinking about a long-overdue vacation? Do you want to beef up your emergency fund? Want a new car? No matter what your goal is, this is a good month to commit to achieving it. You can set up an automatic transfer from your checking account to a savings account or investment vehicle. (We can help! Just give us a call or stop by a CommonWealth One branch this month!)
  • Attend a webinar! April is also Youth Month, so this month, CommonWealth One is offering a webinar on how to raise kids who are financially savvy. Sign up now (and mark your calendar) for our Tips for Raising Money-Smart Kids webinar at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 18 (in Spanish), or noon on Wednesday, April 19. Sign up at cofcu.org/events. You can also access our webinar archives by searching for past webinars in the Calendar of Events and completing the registration form on the webinars of interest. Note: Make sure to deselect, "Exclude Past Events" to reveal the archived webinars.
  • Make an appointment! Did you know that you can get free financial counseling from the people at CommonWealth One? We have a variety of certified financial advisors here in addition to a partnership with the financial counselors at GreenPath. Making an appointment is as easy as calling us or completing the consultation form online at cofcu.org/financial-counseling.

Here’s a bonus: This month, CommonWealth One is hosting a coloring contest for kids up to age 12. Turn in your child’s coloring page — you can download it at cofcu.org/youth-month-2023 — and the first 100 kids will get $10 each. Plus, every child that submits a drawing will automatically be entered into a random drawing for $100.1

We’re excited to continue being your financial partner for life! Please let us know how we can help you learn and grow this spring!
