It's BBQ season!
Whether you're planning simple burgers on the grill or smoking pork for hours, grilling green peppers and corn or looking forward to potato salad, barbecues are a fun way to get everyone together this summer.
Throwing a party at home or in your local park can add up quickly, so it's important to do some planning ahead of time. Throwing a big BBQ party on a small budget is totally doable with a little creativity and planning. Here’s how to keep it festive and yummy:
Limit the guest list. More people mean you'll need more food, so consider limiting your guest list a little bit. You can also invite people in sections -- if your A list has a lot of people who can't make it, then move onto your B list instead of inviting everyone all at once. You can use a free email-based invitation service like Evite instead of getting invitations printed, too.
Make it a potluck. When you tell people you're throwing a party, they may ask, "What can I bring?" Answer that question honestly. Have a list of things you'd like people to bring, including sides, desserts, drinks, plates and napkins, and assign those tasks. (You might consider making it clear on your invitation that the event is potluck so people know what they're getting into!) You can use an online form like Signup Genius if you want to let them choose what to bring.
Take advantage of buying in bulk. If you have a membership to a shopping club like BJ's or Costco, go there for some of your supplies. Check the coupons first, and shop from a list. (If you don't have a club membership, ask a friend if they can go with you and use their membership!)
Stick to cheaper meats. Meat to grill can add up quickly, so consider sticking to cheaper cuts of meat, particularly if you're doing steak. Look for coupons and deals — and look at a few recipes! — before you buy.
Borrow instead of buying. If you're going to need extra tables and chairs, tablecloths, decorations or lawn games, ask the people you've invited if they have any you can borrow. You can also try your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook to borrow things from neighbors, too. Just remember to return everything when you're done!
We hope you have a ton of fun this summer, wherever and however you gather! Remember to use your CommonWealth One VISA® Signature Rewards card to rack up those rewards points!
And don't forget the bug spray!
