The weather is getting warmer, the sun is out — and you may be thinking about getting out of town on that much-needed (and deserved) vacation!
But then reality hits: Vacations are more expensive than they were a few years ago, and you can’t relax on vacation if you’re worried about how much that vacation is costing you.
Here are a few actionable tips to reduce the costs without reducing the fun.
Compare and save! It’s worth your time to sit down and really compare flights, car rentals and more, particularly if you can be a little bit flexible with your schedule. Mid-week flights may be less expensive, and look at off-brand car rentals (or renting a smaller car) can help, too. Also check for discounts that you may be eligible for if you’re a member of AAA, AARP or a military veteran. Do you have credit card points you can “spend” on anything? Does the local tourism bureau have hotel and car rental deals to offer? Do the research and save!
Search for free activities. The activities you do on vacation don’t have to cost a lot. Hit the library before you leave for a few good books. Then check the website of your destination’s tourism bureau. Chances are they have a lot of free events and attractions listed.
Stay somewhere with a kitchen. If possible, book a hotel with a kitchenette or an Airbnb where you can cook. When you arrive at your destination, head to the local grocery store for cereal and milk, some fruit and a few other items, so you don’t spend as much money on eating out for every meal and every snack.
Talk to the locals. Some internet research may point you to restaurants that are “popular with tourists” — but there are probably local, hidden gems that are less expensive and much more interesting. When you’re out shopping or exploring the neighborhood, ask a few locals where they go for the best pizza, ice cream or whatever you’re looking for.
Save up. It may be a little bit late for this year, but start thinking about future vacations now! It’s easy to automatically put as little as $25 per paycheck toward a special vacation savings account that can help you pay for your hotel, car rental, airfare, food or whatever else your vacation includes.
