The Credit Union Difference: Why Membership Is a Financial Advantage

Whether you've been a member of CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union for just a few weeks or several years (or decades!), your membership is paying you back.

Joining a credit union like CommonWealth One comes with financial benefits that you won't get from a local, regional or national bank.

1. We offer fewer and lower fees

Banks rely very heavily on fees for revenue. There's a fee attached to nearly every service they provide. Worse, they are often at the mercy of stockholders who want to see more and more profit. Unlike a bank, credit unions have fewer and less expensive fees. The reason: Credit unions are not-for-profit institutions owned by the very members they serve, so there's much less pressure for profits.

2. We give you better rates

Since your credit union doesn't have to focus as much on profits, credit unions can offer lower interest rates on all sorts of things, from auto loans to home loans, personal loans, student loans and even credit cards. In addition, credit unions may offer higher yields on savings accounts and certificates of deposit.

3. You can access shared branches and free ATMs

Even though most credit unions have fewer branches than national banks, many credit unions (including us!) belong to co-op shared branch networks. These networks give you access to thousands of ATMs nationwide that don't have any surcharges. You can access your cash anywhere!

In addition, if you're traveling, you can visit one of several thousand shared branches in our partner network to deposit and withdraw money, make loan payments, cash checks and transfer money. Before your next trip, check out your nearest ATM or share branch location.

4. We're your neighbors

Your credit union is a member of your community and CommonWealth One is constantly giving back. This includes giving scholarships to local students, hosting events, providing free financial literacy programs, organizing school supply and food drives for community organizations and more. We're always looking for ways to make a difference in the lives our our members and in our community.

5. You have a voice in how things are run

As a member of CommonWealth One, you can make your voice heard in how the credit union operates. This includes the ability to vote in board elections and having a say in shaping policies and services. We love hearing from our members and encourage you to send us feedback and ideas.
